Fuerteventura Key Information

Blessed with warm weather, amazing beaches, and a less crowded environment, this destination is the perfect vacation spot for families, couples, solo travelers, and even amateur and professional athletes who visit the island for the marathon and triathlon events that are often organized.

Most touristic attractions in Fuerteventura have staff that speaks English or German which makes communication easier for travelers. However, if you are looking to visit a less busy part of the island, it is important to know some Spanish words and phrases in order to have a smooth trip.

Both credit cards and cash are used in financial transactions on the island, however, a credit card hold is required at the time of rental, which can be seen as a security deposit.

The tricky part

Even if Fuerteventura is an island, it is important to note that it remains a fairly large territory. While some towns are within walking distance, others will definitely require taking the bus or a taxi. As a result, it is very important to carefully plan ahead your trip be able to enjoy your traveling experience to the fullest.

The island is considered a theft-free destination, which makes it very safe with a very low crime rate. However, if you are planning on leaving your vehicle parked somewhere out of sight, it is recommended to avoid leaving anything valuable inside.

Getting to Fuerteventura

You can get to Fuerteventura either flying there by air or by sea using the ferry services available.

Arriving by plane is considered the most convenient and also the cheapest way to reach the island thanks to its international airport, Fuerteventura Airport (FUE). There are direct flights available from Europe and Africa, allowing people to get to the island directly without the necessary stop in Spain's mainland. Fuerteventura El Matorral Airport Transfers start from $20.

From the airport, you can reach the Capital's, Puerto Del Rosario, city center by bus, operated by Tiadhe, using Route 3 bus that runs from 7am to midnight every 30 minutes for weekdays and hourly for weekends, at a basic fare of 1.45€ ($1.70).

On the ohter hand, if you wish to travel by ferry from mainland Spain, you would have to take the ferry from the port of Cadiz or Huelva to Gran Canaria or Lanzarote starting at 110€ ($130), then take another ferry to Fuerteventura starting at 36€ ($42.50) and 20€ ($23.60) respectively.

Corralejo

This area of the island is considered the second biggest tourist attraction in Fuerteventura. Situated on the northern point of the island, the town is a very lively destination, buzzing with tourists and a variety of activities, in addition to being the home to "El Jable"; the protected dunes of Fuerteventura.

Getting there is considered easy thanks to the bus route 6, available for departures from Puerto Del Rosario to the “Estación de Autobuses” in Corralejo. If you travel by bus, the ride takes 40 minutes to reach Corralejo, available only 6am to 11pm at a one-way bus fare of 3.40€ ($4).

Morro Jable

As the number 1 tourist destination on the island, this town contains multiple traditional restaurants and a variety of shopping options. The major attractions, however, are the beaches right next to the salt meadows.

You can get there by taking the bus through bus route 10, available only 4 times daily from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and twice on Sunday at 1pm and 6pm for a bus fare of 9.70€ ($11.40).

La Lajita

Home to the Oasis Park Zoo, the botanic garden, and camel-ride safaris, this destination is a hidden gem on the island. This fishermen town offers the perfect escape from the typical holiday destination with a lot to offer.

You can get there from “Puerto Del Rosario” also through the bus route 10 for 9.70€ ($11.40), with a comparatively low frequency compared to other routes.

The Frugal Option

Public transportation is considered as the best option to get to your destination on a budget. Thanks to the variety of bus routes available, operated by local company Tiadhe. The bus network connects the major tourist destinations which makes the journey much more enjoyable at an affordable price. The basic bus fare starts at 1.45€ ($1.70) but changes according to the distance, the departure location, and also the arrival destinations.

It is recommended for travelers who are planning on spending some time on the island and using the bus as their main means of transportation, to buy a "Bono" which is a prepaid bus card. This card offers a 5% discount for non-residents on all bus trips and can be bought on the bus for 2€ ($1.70) and recharged with an amount between 10€ ($11.73) and 50€ ($58.66). The Bono card will allow you to travel and explore the island in the most cost-effective way.

If you are arriving at the Fuerteventura airport, you can get to the capital city center by bus through Route 3 bus that runs from 7am to 12:30am with a frequency of 1 bus every 30 minutes for weekdays and 1 bus per hour for weekends at a basic fare of 1.45€ ($1.70). Although most buses follow the same timetable, some busses have less frequent trips, so it is always important to check the bus timetable in advance from Tiadhe when planning your trip in order to avoid any type of confusion.

Private Transfer Options

Many private transportation options are available at Fuerteventura airport including taxis and private transfers with a driver, however, there are no on-demand ride-sharing services available such as Uber, Lyft, Bolt, etc.

For private transfers, you can book a car service from the airport to “Puerto Del Rosario” through Mozio with prices starting at at 19.60€ ($23) for a sedan, 27.28€ ($32) for a private van, and 55.40€ ($65) for a private bus dedicated to larger groups. This service also provides you with the Meet & Greet option, where the driver waits for you at your terminal with a name sign and escorts you to your vehicle for a smooth and comfortable journey. Fuerteventura El Matorral Airport Transfers start from $20.

Taxis are also available for a price starting at 11.93€ ($14) for transfers from the airport to the capital city, you can find official airport taxis waiting outside the terminal building.

Taxi services in Fuerteventura are considered very expensive compared to other means of transportation. Unfortunately, on-demand ride-sharing services and on-demand taxi-hailing applications are also banned on the island as in the rest of the Spanish territory. As a result, if you are not able to take the busy, or if you are traveling outside their usual operating hours, you will have to hail a taxi on the road (which can be a challenge during busy days) or take the official airport taxi if you are traveling from the airport.

The Mozio Recommendation

If you are traveling on a tight budget, it is recommended that you use buses as your main means of transportation. Just take the route 3 bus to the capital city center for only 1.45€ ($1.70).

However, if you wish to have a more comfortable experience after your flights, you can take an official airport taxi and reach your destination for a cost starting at 11.93€ ($14) for the 5-minute ride.

Moving AROUND Fuerteventura

Thanks to the extended network of bus routes available on the island, the Fuerteventura public transportation system connects almost all the major touristic attractions to the capital city for bus fare starting at 1.45€ ($1.70) depending on the route and destination.

Taxis are also available 24/7, especially for transportation outside the bus operating hours. This option will allow you to get around the island whenever you wish especially during the night.

Another recommended option to move around the island and visit the nearby destinations is through bike rental. Thanks to the bike rental services available all across the island, there will be no issue renting a bike in the city that you are staying in. Different providers are offering their services in Fuerteventura including Volcano Bike available in Costa Calma, Morro Jable, Corralejo, and Umgebung for a cost starting at 20€ ($23.46) per day, BKRS Fuerteventura in El Roque, for a cost starting at 15€ ($17.60), and Fuerteventura Bike Shop at a cost starting at 15€ ($17.60) per day.

The Frugal Option

The main bus station on the island is the Puerto Del Rosario bus station that connects the city capital to all the major tourist attractions around Fuerteventura including the airport.

You can get around the island at the most cost-effective price by using the bus service as your main means of transportation during your stay in Fuerteventura. It is highly recommended that you save time and money while using the bus by purchasing the Bono Card. This card offers a 5% discount on all your bus trips, available to be purchased only for 2€ ($1.70) on the bus, and recharged with an amount between 10€ ($11.73) and 50€ ($58.66).

The cost of the ticket depends on the departure and destination stations, for example:

  • Puerto Del Rosario to Corralejo: Bus route 6 for 3.40€ ($4) - 40 minutes ride time.

It is highly recommended that you consider renting a car during your stay in Fuerteventura. Since most of the beaches are only accessible by car, and traveling to different areas of the island is very expensive using a taxi. Lanzarote

If you are visiting Fuerteventura, a day trip to Lanzarote is highly recommended to get the best out of your trip. So just make a quick visit to the nearest canary island and check what the island has to offer.
